Prosecution’s case/defense response: Dunlap, a former U.S. soldier, pleaded guilty to the murder of Kayla Williams (age 17), Kortney Frensley (age 14), and Ethan Frensley (age 5). In addition, Dunlap pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of their mother, Kristy Frensley. After killing the children, Dunlap raped and stabbed their mother and set the family’s home on fire. The defense argued the judge who presided over the case had a conflict of interest, due to his hearing of the Frensley divorce case prior to the murders.

Heilman was found stabbed nine times, patches of her hair torn out and her body dumped alongside a rural country road. Sanborn claimed to have been under extreme emotional distress, which a psychiatrist examined him for. The court concluded the examination did not result in a legal violation.
