Timothy Evans – white, age 53

Prosecution’s case/defense response: Evans was a boarder at the home of 70-year-old Wenda Holling. After several weeks of thinking about killing Holling, Evans strangled her while she was watching television, then put her body into her car, used her bank card to buy beer and cigarettes, and disposed of her remains. Evans had a long criminal history. The defense presented evidence of his troubled childhood and long-term problems of substance abuse.

James Hutto – white, age 39

Sentenced to death in Hinds County, Mississippi

Date of crime:  9/13/10
Prosecution’s case/defense response: Ethel Simpson, age 81, was accompanied to a casino by Hutto. He was later found driving her Mercedes, and her body was found stuffed in a grain bin. Hutto also had charges pending in Alabama for the murder of his aunt, and the robbery and attempted murder of a man. Hutto was a convicted sex offender. At trial, Hutto requested to be sentenced to death.
