Prosecution’s case/defense response: Scherf, A Washington State Reformatory inmate and convicted rapist, was sentence to death after attacking Officer Jayme Biendl and strangling her with an amplifier cord. Defense attorneys suggested that Scherf did not plan to kill Biendl and that he blacked out in the final moments of her life. Prosecutors detailed Scherf’s actions leading up to the killing and explained how such actions would be difficult to accomplish in a prison setting without some planning.
