Marvin Rice—white, age 43
Sentenced in Dent County, Missouri
By: a judge after a jury deadlocked 11-1 for death (Missouri is one of the few states that allows a judge to decide after a jury deadlock rather than defaulting to a non-death sentence)
Date of Crime: 12/10/11
Prosecution’s case/defense response: Rice, a former deputy sheriff, killed his wife and her new boyfriend after she threatened to deny him access to his son. Rice then led the police on a high-speed chase that ended in a shootout in which Rice was wounded. The defense presented evidence that Rice’s pituitary tumor and the 17 medications he was taking affected his impulse control and led him to a paranoid misinterpretation of reality
