Antwan Anthony – black, age 29

Sentenced to death in Pitt County, North Carolina
By: jury
Date of crime: 4/1/12
Prosecution’s case/defense response: Anthony participated in a robbery where all three clerks there were shot and killed. The three clerks were Mokbel “Sam” Mohamed Almujanhi, Gaber Alawi, and Nabil Nasser Saeed Al’mogannahi. Anthony worked with many other individuals who were also charged as being involved with the robbery and murders. Anthony was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of first-degree kidnapping, and three counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, one count of conspiracy to commit robbery, one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, and one count of possession of stolen goods. The defense claimed that Anthony should not receive the death penalty because he was mentally ill. However, Anthony refused to be evaluated. Finally, he was evaluated and the doctors told the judge that they believed Anthony was lying about any mental illness, which resulted in the judge ruling that Anthony was competent to stand trial. Prosecutors claim that Anthony was the shooter, but Anthony denied killing the three victims. The murder weapon was found in Anthony’s home.
