Scott Dozier – white, age 32

Sentenced in Clark County, Nevada
By: a jury
Date of crime: April 18, 2002
Prosecution’s case/defense response: Dozier robbed and murdered Jeremiah Miller (age 22) and then hacked up his body. Miller had come to Las Vegas, with $12,000, in search of pills to make methamphetamine. Dozier was to help him find a connection to purchase the pills. The defense argued that an unidentified drug dealer who loaned Miller the $12,000 was the more likely killer. During the penalty phase, a defense psychologist told jurors that Dozier had been sexually abused as a child by a teenage neighbor and suffered from an anti-social personality disorder with narcissistic traits. In 2005, Dozier was convicted in Arizona of 2d murder in a case where authorities said his victim was dismembered and buried in the desert.

Tamir Hamilton – black, age 28

Sentenced in Washoe County, Nevada
By: a jury
Date of crime: September 14, 2006
Prosecution’s case/defense response: Hamilton raped and murder Holly Quick (age 16). She was found dead, in her bed, by her mother. Quick had been being raped, stabbed 40 times and her throat was slashed. The defense argued that Hamilton suffered from mental illness. A defense psychologist testified that Hamilton was experiencing a psychotic episode the night of Quick’s death. A state psychiatrist called that assertion extremely unlikely. In 2007, Hamilton was sentenced to life in prison for a separate rape and beating of a 20 year woman which occurred two weeks before Quick was killed.

Sentenced in Clark County, Nevada
By: a jury
Date of crime: August 23, 2003
Prosecution’s case/defense response: Walker fatally stabbed Christine Anziano (age 33) during a robbery. As Anziano left the store where she had been shopping, Walker stabbed her five times and ran off with her purse. The jury foreman said Walker’s violent criminal history was the main factor that led to the death sentence.
