Prosecution’s case/defense response: Lamp met Bonnie Lou Irvine via an ad on Craigslist. Her body was later found buried in the back yard of a home where he had stayed—she had been beaten and strangled. Lamp was found driving her car with a tag from his vehicle on it. Lamp had a history of violent crimes. He denied having killed Irvine.

Jonathan Richardson—white, age 21

Sentenced to death in Johnston County, North Carolina

Prosecution case/defense response: Helen Reyes was romantically involved with Richardson. Reyes left her 4 year-old daughter Teghan Skiba in Richardson’s care while Reyes went out of state for military training. Richardson sexually and physically abused Teghan over a 10-day period, eventually hitting her head against something that caused a brain injury that proved fatal. The defense contended that the case was mitigated by the accidental nature of the fatal injury.

Juan Rodriguez—Latino, age 34

Sentenced to death in Forsyth, County, North Carolina

Prosecution’s case/defense response: Rodriguez attacked his wife Maria in their apartment, then drove her away while she was alive and bleeding. He strangled her to death, decapitated her, and dumped her body. Her skull was found 6 months later in a different location.
